Tough and handsome, this dense, silvery foliaged shrub, grows 2 - 3 ft tall and 6 - 9 ft wide. Can be kept lower with annual pruning. Despite the species name, this form is spineless. The inconspicuous summer flowers give way to long clusters of beautiful, ruby-red berries in the fall. Tolerates a wide range of conditions and soil types, inland locations as well as seaside. Highly drought tolerant in full sun to light shade. Reported to even grow well under Eucalyptus. Will grow taller with irrigation, even climbing vertical fences. Fabulous cover for birds and lizards.
