Year End at California Flora Nursery

This will be the last inventory for 2014. Thank you to all our customers for your continued interest and support. Though this is the end of the calendar year, it is the beginning of our propagation season. Our bottom heat benches are filled with cuttings of woody species. We are pre-treating and sowing seed and dividing perennials and grasses.

While our new crops are coming along, we still have a supply of shrubs, along with perennials, grasses and vines. Take advantage of the rains to get your plants established before spring. We have manzanitas and redbuds, mock orange, cream bush and mountain mahogany. Also in stock is the much sought after bush anemone, Carpenteria californica 'Elizabeth' in one gallon containers. This beautiful evergreen shrub is rare and endangered in the wild, but has a long history in cultivation. The cultivar 'Elizabeth' has a compact habit and a profuse display of showy 2 inch white flowers in the late spring. It is drought tolerant needing only occasional summer watering once established.

Here at the nursery customers always rave about the glorious red fall color on our plantings of Vitis californica 'Roger's Red'. We still have some five gallons of this popular cultivar. 'Roger's Red' is a hybrid between Vitis californica and Vitis vinifera, the European wine grape. Consider our own selection from similar parents, we named 'Russian River'. It is extremely vigorous with abundant fruit production and gorgeous fall color. 'Russian River' sports slightly different hues of red and purple fall foliage. The abundant fruits make wonderful juice and jam as well as providing food for a wide array of birds. Every January we enjoy watching the bluebirds working the remains of the summer fruits still clinging to the vines. We have a good supply of the cultivar 'Russian River' in one gallon containers.

We have RIPARIAN SPECIES well represented and in good supply  They are excellent for planting in moist areas along creeks, bioswales, and rain gardens for stabilizing soil and slowing and cleansing water runoff.
