Plectranthus amboinicus
Cuban oregano

From Africa, this TENDER perennial grows about 1 ft. tall and 2 ft. or so wide. Thick, velvety, succulent foliage is highly aromatic with light purple flowers on 6 inch spikes. Popular in Cuban cooking with flavor that falls midway between oregano and thyme. Easy to grow in the ground or containers, in full sun to light shade with regular to moderate watering. Will not survive freezing temperatures. Take indoors for winter or propagate a piece to keep it going until spring.
