Gunnera manicata
dinosaur food

A native of southern Brazil that grows in the mountains at over 2000 ft. in grasslands and along streams. Cold hardy in Sonoma County, its leaves die back in winter to regrow each spring. Leaves on a mature plant are 4 ft. or more across on stems that are 4 - 8 ft. tall! Differs from Gunnera tinctoria primarily in that it holds its stems more vertically. Needs tons of water and rich soil. Protect from drying winds and afternoon sun.
