*Aesculus californica
California buckeye

Broad headed, deciduous native tree. Rapid growth, 15 ft. or more tall, depending on culture and site. Striking, fragrant white flowers in long candelabra-like spikes in spring. Interesting large pear-shaped fruits which split to reveal dark brown shiny seeds that are often used for arrangements. Buckeyes drop their leaves in summer, however with moderate irrigation leaves will be retained longer. Bark is smooth and gray - pleasing visually and to the touch. Adaptable and tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Sun to light shade. Requires little to no water once established, though tolerant of regular water. Flowers provide hummingbirds, butterflies and native bees with nectar. Its bark insects attract woodpeckers and nuthatches.
